Canada 150 Celebration

Canada 150 - Family & Friends.jpg

In celebration of Canada's 150th birthday, Gannaiden: Sculpture Garden of Possibilities hosted a gathering on December 10, 2017 of post-WWII Canadian immigrants from a dozen different countries who came to live in the MRC Vaudreuil-Soulanges Region.

"The Canada 150 event came together in an organic manner; it grew in accord with the participants. The organizers, myself included followed along. Aspiring to seize the spirit of the moment, Sébastien Roy hand-held a movie camera, moving about spontaneously and unscripted. The footage speaks for itself. Heritage is not a stagnant concept. While heritage always stands on the shoulders from whence it came, heritage changes with time. This project aspired to do no more than shine a light on heritage as an on-going conversation."    -- Elaine Steinberg, Curator

In this photo, MP Peter Scheifke holds a cluster of candles in response to the shortage of light in December. The candles also signal an additional message - that the end is the beginning.

Inga Crooke Lawson’s contribution To Canada 150 was Trinidad Pelau - a rice-based dish brought from away and adapted by her family.

For Gannaiden’s Recipe Box, Lawson takes sharing family foods one step further. Not only does Lawson hand over a written recipe but also a spontaneous video on a mobile phone. Notwithstanding, it captures Inga’s personality, her family memory and demonstrates preparation techniques.
